How Punjab celebrates

The story

In Punjab, Diwali is also Bandi Chhor Divas, the Day of Liberation. Guru Hargobind Sahib was freed from Gwalior Fort and refused to leave unless 52 imprisoned kings were freed with him. When he reached Amritsar, the city lit up to welcome him.

Every year since, the Harmandir Sahib glows with lamps and fireworks over the sarovar, and the old saying goes: dal-roti at home, but Diwali in Amritsar.

At home, Diwali is pinni made with desi ghee, the crackle of Amritsari papad, and a lot of family.

Every box lights two homes

The hands behind this box

A potter shaping clay on a traditional wheel

Phulkari embroiderers and Delhi's potters

Phulkari, 'flower work', was once stitched by mothers and grandmothers for a daughter's wedding. Today the phulkari in this box is embroidered by women in Punjab's villages, for whom every piece is income of their own.

The diyas come from North India's potter colonies like Kumhar Gram in Delhi's Uttam Nagar, where families have struggled since their wood-fired kilns were shut in 2018 and cheap imported lights took over the markets.

We buy from these craft communities in the open market, in bulk, close to Diwali. We name a specific family or group only once they've agreed to be featured.
