For Gujaratis, Diwali is the last night of the Vikram Samvat year. Business families do chopda pujan, blessing new account books, and homes are lit up and covered in rangoli for Lakshmi.
The next morning is Bestu Varas, the Gujarati New Year. Everyone visits everyone, touches the elders' feet and says "Saal Mubarak". Every host is ready with a nasto tray of mathiya, chorafali and mohanthal, and a fresh toran hangs at the door.
The festive mood carries on until Labh Pancham, when shops reopen for the year with a blessing for profit.
