In Goa, Diwali night is Narkasur night. For weeks, neighbourhood groups build giant, fierce effigies of the demon Narakasura out of paper, straw and bamboo, then parade them through the streets on the eve of Naraka Chaturdashi.
Before dawn the effigies go up in flames. Families take an oil bath, crush a bitter karit fruit underfoot for the demon's defeat, and then sit down to Goa's real Diwali feast: plates of pohe, cooked several ways, with jaggery and coconut.
Pohe are shared from house to house all morning.
