In Bengal, the night of Diwali belongs to Kali Puja. Pandals rise for Ma Kali, and homes light diyas and candles along every ledge and rooftop.
The night before is Bhoot Chaturdashi. Families light choddo prodip, fourteen lamps, for fourteen generations of ancestors, to guide their spirits and keep away the dark. At lunch they eat choddo shaak, fourteen leafy greens cooked together.
Two days later comes Bhai Phonta: sisters put a sandalwood phonta on their brothers' foreheads and pray for their long life, then feed them sweets.
